Blackboard for Faculty

End of Term Course Maintenance

At the end of the term, Distance Learning recommends that you perform the following course management tasks for your Blackboard course:

Export Gradebook

You can export your gradebook to a .csv text-file that can be saved on your computer and then opened in Excel. Keeping a copy of your gradebook is a good idea for backup and archival purposes because, once students are removed or “un-enrolled” from a Blackboard course, their grades are also removed from the gradebook. To export a copy of your existing gradebook, follow the steps described below:

  1. Logon to the course that contains the gradebook you wish to export.
  2. Click on the Control Panel link.
  3. From the Control Panel screen, under the Assessments category, click on Gradebook.
  4. Click on the Download Grades button.
  5. Click the Save button.
  6. Select the location where you want to save the file.
  7. Click the Save button.
  8. Click the OK button.

By default, the file is saved as gb_export.csv.

Remove Students

If you don’t remove students after you have exported your gradebook, your course will appear in the students’ “My Courses” section of Blackboard as a course they are currently taking. To remove students from a previous term, follow the steps described below:

  1. Logon to the course from which you want to remove students.
  2. Click on the Control Panel link.
  3. From the Control Panel screen under the User Management category, click on Remove Users from Course.
  4. Click on the Search link with nothing in the search field. This will bring up the full list of students. Selectively place a check mark in each box. Type Yes with a capital Y and click the submit button.

Make Course Unavailable

To make your course unavailable when you don't want to reuse it next term, follow the steps described below:

  1. Logon to the course you want to make unavailable.
  2. Click on the Control Panel button.
  3. From the Control Panel screen under the Course Options category, click on Course Settings.
  4. Click on the Course Availability link and select the option to make the course unavailable.
