Orientation to Online Courses

Course Start Dates: Distance Learning courses begin on the first day of the term.
Courses may not be listed in the Blackboard Course Catalog until the first day of the term. If you do not see your course listed in the Blackboard Course Catalog on the first day of the term, contact the course instructor.

On-Campus Orientations: Some Distance Learning have a mandatory on-campus orientation meeting. If your course has a mandatory on-campus orientation, that information will be given in the printed schedule.

Blackboard: Clackamas uses Blackboard, a course management system that allows course material to be delivered over the Internet. Blackboard has a variety of easy-to-use learning tools that create a virtual classroom where students and instructors can interact with one another, and courses can be enhanced with audio and video components. It is recommended that students participate in a free, non-credit workshop to learn how to use Blackboard. Workshop dates, times and locations can be found at http://dl.clackamas.edu/DemoClasses.htm

Getting Started: After you have registered for your course and made arrangements to pay your tuition and fees, you are ready to create a Blackboard account, as described below. Students should follow the directions for creating a Blackboard account exactly as they are given. Every step must be completed!

First, create your Blackboard account:

  1. Go to http://clackamas.blackboard.com

  2. Click on the "Create Account" button.

  3. Fill in the information requested (be sure to include your email address!) and click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.

  4. Click "OK".

  5. Go to the next step, which is finding your course in Blackboard on the first day of the term

Next, find course in Blackboard on the first day of the term:

  1. Click on the "Courses" tab near the top left side of the screen.

  2. On the right side of the screen (under Course Catalog), click on the appropriate category. (Note: Courses may not be listed in the course catalog until the first day of the term. If, on the first day of the term, you do not find your course listed, contact the instructor.)

  3. Click on the correct course name/section number. Click on the "ENROLL" button to the right of the course name. Do not skip this step!

  4. Click on the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page. You will get a message telling you that your login request has FAILED. This is NOT ACCURATE. Ignore the message; your enrollment is being processed.

  5. You will receive an e-mail message indicating that you have been enrolled in the course. After you receive this e-mail, proceed to the next step.

  6. Login to Blackboard using the login and password you chose when you created your account. A link to your course will show under "Courses in which you are enrolled". NOTE: Links to classes may not be viewable in Blackboard before the first day of class. If you don't see a link to your class on the first day of the term, contact your instructor by e-mail.

  7. Click on the course link (name of your class).

  8. You are now on the Home Page for the class. Read the material and follow the instructions.

Purchasing Textbooks and Materials: Textbooks, course materials and some software may be purchased either in the Clackamas Bookstore or online at www.cccbooks.com
