Infrared Spectra

In this section we will take up the issue of infrared (IR) spectra.

We will look at what causes IR spectra and place that in the context of the types of molecular motion that molecules have.

Then we will look at how IR spectra are displayed and what information about the molceules is shown in the various spectral regions.

After that we will look at the specifics of recognizing the IR spectra of alkanes and alkyl halides. You will learn that although the IR spectra of alkanes and alkyl halides are very similar (indistinguishable in the context of this course), they will serve as the basis for recognizing other types of molecules (classes of compounds) in future lessons.

You will make use of IR spectra in this course to help you in the identification of classes of organic chemicals midway through this course. Beyond this course, you will find that there is value in the experience you will gain in pattern recognition. For example, the interpretation of the shapes and locations of absorptions on an IR spectra is very similar to the interpretation of the shapes and locations of the signals on an EKG.
