Wrap-Up

Summary

In this overview of biochemistry, we have looked at the roles of carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids in living things. We have focused on the molecular structure and bonding and types of reactions of these compounds. The reactions that we have looked at involve the absorption and release of energy, the gain and loss of electrons and hydrogen atoms and water molecules and, in addition, you should have noticed the step-wise aspect of biochemistry. Complex molecules are built up from simpler molecules and complex reactions take place in small simple steps.

The field of biochemistry is much broader and deeper than what little you have been exposed to in this lesson. Nevertheless, I hope that you have a better understanding and appreciation of the kinds of chemical changes that take place inside of us and in plant and other animals as well. As you finish this lesson, be sure to go back to the objectives to see specifically what aspects of this lesson you are going to be held responsible for and be sure to ask questions about any of those objectives that you feel you need additional work on, or any other aspects of biochemistry that you have an interest in.
